Be Water Smart! “Healthy Water, Healthy Food” Community Event on May 18
Join Seattle Parks Foundation, Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands, and Seattle Tilth for a community event at Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetland. “Healthy Water, Healthy Food” is a family friendly educational event and volunteer work party, teaching people about the natural wetland area and helping to restore it.
Visitors can learn how to be “water-smart” in their everyday actions – at home, in their yards, with their pets and cars. Participants will have the opportunity to dig in and get their hands dirty, helping improve the wetland habitat. Volunteers will be spreading mulch and remove invasive plants. Snacks and tools will be provided, and families and groups are welcome.
RBUFW is one of Southeast Seattle’s hidden treasures with six acres of wetland habitat, including 300 feet of Lake Washington shoreline. Over the next several years Seattle Tilth is restoring four acres overrun by non-native species with the support of community volunteers. The restored wetland buffer will improve stormwater management and enhance the habitat for aquatic plants and animals, creating a healthier and more sustainable urban ecosystem. The rest of the site is dedicated to growing food organically and organic food education programs for the community.
